The second generation Prius plug-in hybrid, the Toyota Prius Prime, was unveiled at the 2016 New York International Auto Show. The Prius Prime has an 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery that delivers an EPA-rated all-electric range of 25 mi (40 km). On one full tank of regular-grade gasoline and a full electric charge, total range is 640 mi (1,030 km)[7] Toyota’s initial expectation was a range of 22 mi (35 km) on a full charge, doubling the first generation model range. To keep up with the demands of charging the larger pack, the onboard charger was upgraded to a 3.3 kW, up from 2.2 kW in the Prius Plug-in. The lithium-ion battery pack can be charged in 5.5 hours with a standard plug at 120 volts, or a dedicated 240 volts outlet can cut the charging time by more than half.

Toyota Prius Prime User Reviews

  1. Dependable, solid, and smooth. Only thing to think about is if you have access to enough charging points. Personally, a great fit for me and my family.

  2. Definitely less space than a normal prius, but worth it when you save so much on cost. Also, the range is amazing. Much better than the Chevy Volt.

  3. Honestly the best hybrid on the market. It’s compact, comfortable, quiet, and a definite bargain. Great for city or suburban life and easy to take on longer trips. I have nothing but good things to say about the Prius Prime.

  4. Very dependable car. Drives well–transitions really well between gas and electric, so much that you barely notice it. Incredibly fuel efficient, which is probably it’s main selling point IMO. I do think the acceleration could be improved on, but otherwise am a happy camper with the Prius Prime.

  5. I’d like to know the battery Manufacturer on each plug in hybrid, to me that could be the weak link in decision making as well as the recharge rate, kWhrs per 100 miles of driving.
