The BMW i3 is BMW’s first 100%-electric car built electric from the ground up. It is part of BMW’s “born electric” i series. Its price puts it somewhat in the middle of the Nissan Leaf and the Tesla Model S. Despite looking a bit bulky, the BMW i3 is the lightest electric car on the market, thanks to its carbon fiber body. It’s a smooth & sweet drive. Compared to BMW’s overall sales, the i3 is selling very well, making it clear that BMW is one of the auto-manufacturing pioneers in the electric vehicle space.

The newest iteration of the BMW i3 features 94 Ah Samsung SDI lithium-ion battery cells situated in a 33 kWh battery pack, and an impressive 118 MPGe (EPA fuel efficiency rating). Other specs + range again:

  • 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space
  • 125 kW (168 horsepower)
  • 184 pound-feet of torque
  • 114 miles (183 km) of range

With regard to the newest iteration of the BMW i3 REx, that option possesses a 97 mile (156 km) US EPA range rating for the all-electric system, paired with a 2.4 gallon gas/petrol range-extender system, allowing for a total range of 180 miles (290 km) per full tank + full charge. The new BMW i3 REx was granted a 111 MPGe rating by the US EPA. Due to the range extender, this option comes with just 9.2 cubic feet of cargo space with the back seats up.

What else stands out about the BMW i3? Extensive use of carbon fiber in the body panels, the use of rear suicide doors, a large hatchback opening, and a polarizing appearance.

BMW i3 User Reviews

  1. I love the i3, as you’ve likely noticed by now. It is a lot of fun to accelerate in, has a great seating position (in the front — is a bit tight in the back), has a wonderfully open view out the windows, and is on the cutting edge with interior and exterior materials. Loading and unloading kids also seems quite easy compared to other cars. Navigation tech isn’t that exciting, unfortunately, and space in the back & trunk is a bit lacking. But man, it is so torquey and the handling is so much fun! I give it a rare 5 stars.

  2. While it looks tiny on the outside, the BMW i3 is actually relatively roomy with plenty of space for the drivers and passengers. This is definitely something that concerned me, but turned out not to be an issue. I love almost everything about the car, it’s very high tech, but I’m actually quite disappointed with the headlights because they are surprisingly dim. But that’s really my only complaint.
