You could say that activism is in the DNA of Somali-Canadian Ilwad Elman. The daughter of late peace activist Elman Ali Ahmed and social activist Fartuun Adan, she works alongside her mother Fartuun at the Elman Peace and Human Rights Center, which was set up in honour of her late father. Ilwad works as the Director of Programs and Development, covering a diverse range of areas surrounding human rights, education, gender justice and more. The organisation operates in South and Central Somalia. Ilwad has also spoken at a large number of UN and international events on issues such as gender-based violence and how to counter violent extremism through youth engagement.
