Sri Lankan-born and Canadian-raised venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya joined Facebook when it was less than a year old, and during his time there started making investments on the side. He left Facebook in 2011, having generated enough of his own money to launch his own fund called The Social+Capital Partnership, which became Social Capital in 2015. The fund focuses on technology in healthcare and education. Palihapitiya made headlines in 2017 for his outspoken criticism of the negative effect that he sees Facebook is having on society. He later backtracked a little on his comments, but the points he made about the damage social media can cause still stand.
