A staggering 300,000 women die each from complications resulting from childbirth, and the vast majority (99%) happen in underdeveloped countries. A huge contributor to this problem is the lack of reliable electricity in medical facilities, often lacking even basic lighting. Starting in 2009, Laura Stachel launched WeCare Solar to address this problem and to bring clean energy to those most in need. The company developed photovoltaic systems that can be used to supply lighting along with medical and communication equipment. In 2017 the initiative has continued to save lives in places such as Uganda, Nigeria and the Philippines and recognition has come in the form of many awards each year.
